An apple to start the year
I felt a little change in the air today, as if winter is on the wane. Hope you’re enjoying the new year.
To kick off 2025, thought I’d start with a wholesome apple. I created this style after gazing at books on the British artist/illustrator Barnett Freedman (1901-1958), who was famous for drawing directly onto lithographic stone. Obviously I didn’t use an actual slab of limestone for my piece but if I ever get the chance, I wouldn’t say no.
I’m drawn by the warmth and character of Freedman’s work, and feel a particular affinity with him as he’s a fellow East Ender. He often made work with the Curwen Press which was in Plaistow where I grew up. Me and my sisters regularly walked by the Curwen and often stopped to admire the beautiful unicorn picked out in relief beside the entrance.
I’ll be exploring this three colour technique for a while as it suits my hand-drawn style and it’s really enjoyable to do. Watch this space.
