Think big, do small
I’ve been watching the trend for selling digital assets online and decided to try my hand at creating my own.
After a little research I found Creative Market which I think has the best user interface (important if you’re a design-led space IMO). I knew I’d have to apply to join as they like to keep the quality high so, although it was a little daunting, I sent off my application. I was super chuffed when they got back and accepted me the same day. Hoorah!
Then I was a bit daunted again (oh dear) as I had to make and launch something … I followed advice about starting with an MVP (minimum viable product) and went for hand-drawn vectors which I can create relatively easily (using Adobe Fresco and Illustrator if you’re wondering). I launched my first product in just over a week.
You can check it out here.
‘But what now?’ is the question I’ve literally been asking myself since then.
I realise the minimum on my MVP has gone up
Since creating that first MVP, it feels like my minimum has gone up. I know more about the back-of-house and technical side of things on Creative Market; I’ve broken the ice by actually making something plus I have a better feel for what sells and what doesn’t.
However, I’m still working out how to fit in and it feels a bit like the first day at secondary school… which I remember as a kind of cacophony of noise and movement where everyone else seems to know where to go but you.
This is one of those times that I really need to get into creative practice mode by moving forward and taking action despite not having any guidance. This is a matter of responding to the environment, working with the tools/skills I have and continually adapting and refining. In other words, I need to think big but do small.
Keeping the first goal small
My first goal is this: to find out who my customer is and then develop products they need. Right now this feels like it will be a process, meaning something I’ll need to work towards and decide rather than some big revelation I’ll have.
For my second MVP, I’ve decided to create a halloween set which I’m planning to launch soon. Wish me luck!
