Mysterious tunnels that lead nowhere

Illustration of museum object

This souvenir thimble is from the Williamson Tunnels in Liverpool. These amazing tunnels are one of the great mysteries of the Industrial Revolution. They were built in the 1800s by a tobacco merchant named Joseph Williamson, who hired a team of men to build a network of underground passageways under the Edge Hill district of the city. What’s remarkable about the tunnels is that they lead nowhere, and no-one really knows why they were built.

I’m not really sure what else to say … like Williamson’s project, this blog post has no conclusion.
